A backflow burner is shaped so smoke from a backflow cone travels down the piece instead of rising straight up. Light the tip of the cone, blow out the flame, and set the cone in the holder at the top. Choose a still corner. A draft pushes the smoke sideways and the downward trail disappears.
Put the burner on a heat-safe surface. Glass and metal get warm. Keep it away from curtains, children, and pets, and stay in the room while the cone is burning. Open a window if the room is small. The lotus burners are also made to sit on a shelf when they are not lit.
